Newark, DE - Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington man for his seventh DUI following a property damage crash that occurred yesterday morning.
The incident occurred yesterday morning, Thursday, October 1, 2015, at approximately 10:10 a.m., as troopers were told to respond to the First Student Transportation bus yard located at 750 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, for the report of an unresponsive operator behind the wheel of a vehicle. Upon the arrival of troopers and Emergency Medical Services, John R. Owens, 57, of Wilmington, was found to be passed out behind the wheel of a Dodge Caliber which had entered the bus yard and struck the rear of a school bus that was parked in the lot. Troopers learned that Owens had entered the lot, struck the bus, and then exited the lot onto Stanton-Christiana Road. He then re-entered the bus lot and struck a chain link fence before passing out in the car.
John Owens was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital for evaluation. Owens did not sustain any injuries in the crash. A DUI investigation then ensued and troopers subsequently arrested Owens for his 7th Offense DUI, Driving while Suspended, and No Valid Proof of Insurance.
